Letter, 1919, San Jose, California [to] Mr. Edwin Markham, New York City. / Henry Mead Bland. 1919.

Henry is enjoying the country lodge and wishes Edwin was there. He has finished a long story The keeper of the Sheep. He would lke Edwin's comments on his verse The Yosemite. His favorite of Edwin's is Wind and Lyre. He would like Markham to send a copy of The Shoes autographed for Clara H. Smith. Edith Daley writes for the San Jose News. She admires "Virgilia and Crowning Hour". He discusses a gentleman, Colonel Philo Hersey who is a backer for the House Proposition. He too would like an autographed copy of The Shoes. He continues about Five Maidens, The Morrison Sisters, they would like an autograph of Markham to frame for there house. He wants an autograph of The Man with the Hoe for the Hoe room.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
